Who we are
Berrymans Lace Mawer (BLM) is one of the largest litigation law firms in the country – 95% of its turnover relates to the resolution of disputes. It provides advice to a broad range of commercial and public sector clients, including insurance companies, FTSE-100 companies, small and medium enterprises, local authorities, police authorities, professional service organisations, government departments, universities and other public sector institutions.
BLM’s services are integrated across eight UK offices in Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Southampton and Stockton-on-Tees. All BLM offices work closely together to ensure clients receive a seamless service. The firm is over 1000 strong, with 121 partners and more than 300 additional legal professionals. Despite its tremendous growth in recent years it has managed to retain its friendly working atmosphere.
What do we do
The firm operates in almost 50 areas of the law, grouped broadly into eight market sectors: insurance and indemnity, construction and property, business services, leisure, retail, public sector, transport, and media and technology.
Many BLM partners play an active role in professional and industry bodies that are shaping the legal landscape. Partners take a leading role in the Forum of Insurance Lawyers (including current president, Henry Bermingham, BLM Birmingham), sit on the Law Society’s Civil Litigation Committee, Court of Appeal Users’ Group, as Deputy District Judges and Law Society's Clinical Negligence Reference Group.
BLM is regularly involved in test case and high profile litigation on behalf of its clients, including Barker v Corus (apportionment of damages) and Majrowski v Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Trust (vicarious liability of employers for harassment damages). The firm is involved in the EL ‘Trigger’ Litigation (Municipal Mutual Insurance v Zurich Insurance and others), a test case in which certain insurers are looking to redefine the trigger provision in historic employers’ liability policies. BLM also acted for one of the five main defendant groups in the recent TAG litigation, which culminated in a settlement following several days of mediation in this complex multi-party professional negligence dispute.
To apply
BLM’s continued success depends on recruiting talented people. The firm has created an environment where ambitious and talented individuals are given the freedom to develop and achieve their full potential. To find out about our current vacancies, please visit our website www.blm-law.com |
