Hackney Council Legal Division.
The Legal Division is the Council’s own firm of solicitors. The division advises the Council on changes in the law which may affect what it does, sets out the options which the Council has to do things or how to react to the doings of others. The division is also involved in delivering the choices which the Council makes through e.g. letting and enforcing contracts, disposing of land or securing income through rents and charges or by enforcing the law where the Council is the local regulator of the behaviour of others and defends the Council’s interests where legal challenges are brought.
The Council has 32 legally qualified staff with 11 support staff. We are based at 298 Mare Street across the road from Hackney Town Hall. We have access to further legal resources in 8 legal firms who have been approved to undertake work for the Council and in selected Barristers’ Chambers.
