Nelsons was formed in 1983. Originally it was a general practice located in central Nottingham. Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s it grew organically and by 1998 the firm had 26 partners and approximately 200 staff providing a full range of legal services to the corporate, private and legal aid sectors.
In 1999 and 2000 the firm grew through a series of mergers with some of the region’s best known, well respected and long established practices. These mergers enlarged and strengthened the core Nottingham practice whilst expanding our base across the East Midlands, providing a major presence in each location, as well as creating a platform for future growth.
Nelsons is now a major regional player and is one of the largest, strongest law firms in the East Midlands with 35 partners and approx 270 staff across offices in Nottingham, Derby and Leicester.

The firm operates through a Business Unit Structure comprised of:
Family – The firm provides specialist, high quality family law advice throughout the East Midlands. The department advises on divorce and separation, property and financial settlements and issues involving children. Hilary Freeman also has a significant family mediation practice.
Personal Injury – The personal injury department handles compensation claims for injuries caused, for example, in road accidents, accidents at work or as a result of clinical negligence, as well as advising victims of violent crime. We also have considerable experience in co-ordinating group actions and act for legal expenses insurers.
Litigation – The firm has one of the largest litigation teams in the region, acting on a wide range of commercial litigation including company and commercial disputes, international disputes, insolvency litigation and mediations. In addition to commercial litigation, the Business Unit includes a separate debt recovery team, who recover debts from all over the world.
Private Client – This Business Unit incorporates Probate, Residential Conveyancing and Financial Services. The probate team handles all aspects of wills, trusts, tax planning and estate administration. The residential conveyancing team is one of the largest in the region and our Independent Financial Advisers provide advice on mortgages and a wide range of investment matters, complementing both the residential conveyancing and probate work.
Business Services – This Business Unit incorporates Corporate Services, Commercial Property, Employment, Construction and Engineering and Commerce and Technology. The corporate services department at Nelsons has largely separated into two teams, one dealing with commercial work and one handling corporate advisory and transactional work. As well as acting in the general purchasing, sale or leasing arena, the commercial property department advises on a wide range of development projects. The employment department is one of the largest in the East Midlands dealing with all employment law issues, from drafting contracts and documentation through to representation at Employment Tribunals. The construction unit advises on all aspects of construction law, from negotiating and drafting contracts, right through to risk management and dispute resolution in the context of adjudication, mediation, arbitration and litigation. The licensing team provide advice to a wide spectrum of clients on all matters relating to gaming, liquor and entertainment licensing.
