Geldards has one of the more unusual geographical spreads of the country’s regional law firms, having its head office in Cardiff and other offices in Nottingham and Derby.
Geldard’s history goes back 170 years, but the firm’s East Midlands outposts are a much more recent development. The Derby office was opened in 1989, initially to service key client Williams Holdings, followed by a merger with Nottingham-based Eking Manning in 2000.
Overall, Geldards now has 54 partners, 75 assistants and over 300 staff. It is focused on commercial and high-end private client disciplines for a variety of corporate, local authority, government and individual clients. Nationally, the firm divides its work into 4 broad areas – company/commercial, commercial property, dispute resolution. Within these groups, the firm has developed particular strengths in M&A, corporate finance, banking, IP/IT, public law, planning and environmental law, energy, insolvency, tax and trusts and estates and property-related litigation. It also has a specialist team focused on the German market and a debt recovery unit.
In the East Midlands, Geldards is rated by the directories in respect of its banking and finance, commercial litigation, commercial property, construction, corporate/commercial, employment, IT, insolvency, tax and trusts and estates, PFI and sport practices.
Geldards prides itself in “delivering City standards at local rates” and potential recruits will, therefore, need to be of high calibre. The key aspects of its service to clients include friendliness, proactivity and flexibility and it is expected that those who join will be able to display all these qualities in abundance.
