Keoghs' motto – ‘strong, approachable and safe’ – might seem a little odd compared to the mission statements usually put out by law firms, but Bolton and Coventry-based Keoghs is a firm that likes to do things a little bit differently.
The ‘strong’ part applies primarily to Keoghs’ insurance practice, which covers both complex case and volume insurance litigation and boasts blue chip insurance companies such as AXA and Brit Insurance on its client roster. However, the firm, which also uses the motto ‘Keoghs handles it all’, has 2 other divisions - fraud, which mainly specialises in insurance scams, and business services, which incorporates the corporate finance, company and commercial, employment, commercial property, IP and private client practices.
‘Approachable’ refers to the way it would like its lawyers to be perceived by their clients, as well as ‘innovative, flexible and dynamic’. Inevitably, this is reflected in the qualities the firm expects its recruits to display – those looking to join the firm’s 28 partners and 450 staff not only have to show that they can work as part of a team (approachability applies to the internal culture too) but also creativity.
In return, the firm offers what it describes as a genuine commitment to personal development, pointing to its 2004 award of Investors in People status and its regular appearance in the Sunday Times 100 Best Places to Work list, in which it appears at number 22 in the 2004 poll.
Keoghs indeed seems to go the extra mile when looking after its staff. The final adjective in its mission statement – ‘safe’ – could be interpreted 2 ways. From a client point of view, the firm describes itself as ‘honest and transparent’, but Keoghs likes to make sure that its staff are well-protected from the perils of legal practice too. The firm has awards from the British Safety Council for lower than average accident rates and a commitment to health and safety at board level. And, to add to the atmosphere of calm, Keoghs has also introduced a range of ‘well-being’ services for its staff, including on-site hypnotherapy, reflexology and Indian head massage as well as advice on nutrition and aromatherapy.
