Schools
As with most things in the East Midlands, variety and diversity are the watchwords when it comes to education too. With its contrasting regions of wealthy market towns and relatively poor inner city areas in places like Nottingham there is a huge gap between the best and worst schools.
Unfortunately, despite a number of extremely good independent and comprehensive schools in Derby, Nottingham and Leicester, all 3 city’s LEAs are ranked as below average for GSCE pass rates overall.
Yet, out in the country, the wider LEAs of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and the small rural LEA of Rutland, are all above average for GCSE pass rates, although they have less schools on offer as a whole.
Although this split between town and country might make prospective denizens of the East Midlands worry about placing their children in inner city schools, the very best schools in Derby, Nottingham and Leicester are still more than a match for the best outside the towns.
For example, the famous Repton School built in 1557 in the rural lands outside Derby which charges £15,000 a year for non-borders has a far lower GCSE pass rate that the best independent schools in Nottingham, such as the Nottingham High School for Girls which has a 99% pass rate for five GCSE graded A to C. Repton’s score is only 85%.
However, no matter what your persuasion in style of school, for those who want simply the best education for their children there are plenty of top schools of all varieties in the East Midlands to choose from.
