Schools
Yorkshire is well-served by the independent school sector and indeed is home to several famous ones, including Ampleforth College near York and Ashville College in Harrogate.
The better state schools tend to fall outside the Leeds metropolitan area. Although as the table below shows there are some clear exceptions, such as Leeds Grammar and Prince Henry’s Grammar in Otley. However, despite the names, very few state schools in the region are still selective, although grammar schools do survive in the North Yorkshire towns of Ripon and Skipton.
Generally, the Leeds and Bradford local education authorities under-perform the national average in terms of both GCSE and A-level grades, while North Yorkshire schools are generally above average.
