Although it has doubled in size in the past 6 years, Brooke North remains the smallest of the middle-tier firms competing in Leeds’ commercial legal market. But what it lacks in bulk, it more than seems to make up for in quality, boasting a diverse range of clients from multinationals such as Hyundai Heavy Industries and Best Western Hotels to Plcs such as Rushbond and Headway through to organisations such as the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and the Ramblers Association.
Brooke North’s biggest department is commercial property (it represents a number of property developers and construction companies) and its other core departments are corporate and litigation. The firm also has a significant private client practice (tax, trusts and probate and residential conveyancing) representing a number of prominent individuals as well as a specialism in insolvency and a growing white collar crime practice led by partner Nigel Middlemass.
The firm calls itself ‘Leeds’ best kept secret’, describing the secret of its success as being the ‘partner led’ service it provides. It is hard to see how it could be any other way, when the firm’s Leeds base has 10 partners, but only 16 assistant solicitors.
