Of all the local education authorities covering the Merseyside region, only Wirral outperforms the national average, although Sefton (which covers the towns, such as Southport, to the north of Liverpool) is only a fraction below.
Wirral has retained Grammar Schools, and the well-known Bluecoat School in Liverpool is also selective. Otherwise, selective schools are in the independent sector.
