Manchester has developed a number of breakaway boutique firms in recent years, including Nexus and Harvey Goodman. Turner Parkinson, formed in 1997 by the eponymous partners from Addleshaws and another from Wacks Caller, is now the veteran of these.
Since then, Turner Parkinson has grown to 10 partners and 20 other lawyers strong. The firm has been successful in luring further partners away from the large commercial firms in the city as it strives to fulfil its strategy of “providing clients with the same calibre of people as the big law firms, but at a much lower cost”.
These costs are kept down through keeping a rein on marketing spend and the efficient use of IT. The formula seems to be working, as the firm has grown and has attracted a wide range of clients within its owner-managed business (OMB) and smaller Plc target, from a £2bn turnover business to what the management describe as “cornershops with attitude”.
Services include the range of corporate and commercial disciplines as well as commercial property, IP, employment (which includes a human resources consultancy service, TP People) and litigation as well as more specialist practices in insolvency, professional negligence, computer contracts and entertainment law. And, as is common with firms serving OMBs, Turner Parkinson also offers private client services, including trusts and tax advice, family law and residential property.
Clients of the firm’s family practice include the scriptwriters of Coronation Street. Turner Parkinson have advised on the domestic traumas of its residents on a number of occasions to ensure the accuracy of their storylines. These include the bigamy of Ken Barlow's son and Steve McDonald's legal position relating to Tracey's child Deirdre's rights in the event of Ken's death.
