Schools
Cheshire abounds with independent prep and senior schools, while the Greater Manchester also enjoys a high number of fee-paying and selective schools, including Manchester Grammar which, as a flick through the Chambers directory will demonstrate, produces a prolific number of senior lawyers, as well as the occasional England cricket captain.
At state level, the Manchester area has both some very high-achieving local education authorities, such as Trafford which is the top of England and Wales, and Cheshire which appears in the top 20 (of 149). Other local LEAs that outperform the national average at GCSE are Warrington, Stockport and Bury, although Tameside, Bolton, Oldham, Halton, Wigan and Rochdale all achieve below average results and Manchester and Salford LEAs reside in the bottom 20.
Of the Greater Manchester and Cheshire LEAs, only Trafford has retained selective state schools, although there are a number of comprehensive schools in both that achieve results on a par with many of the region’s independent schools.
