Boyds prides itself on being run more as a business than a traditional legal practice. It was one of the first in Scotland to appoint a non-lawyer as managing director in 2002 and its non-legal personnel are given a greater role in the running of the 24-lawyer, 7-partner firm than might be expected at the average Scottish middle-tier practice. All but two of the firm’s partners are based in Glasgow, where the firm was founded in 1955, the remainder being housed in Edinburgh.
One aspect of this approach is the firm’s client care charter, which provides transparency on fees and sets out expected response times. It will come as little surprise then that a commercial approach to practice is expected of its lawyers, as well as the usual ability to understand the business objectives of their clients.
Boyds describes itself as a business with a base in law rather than a law firm. This commercial attitude means that its lawyers are also expected to develop creative rather than simply legalistic solutions for their clients and to reflect this approach in the way they communicate with them.
“We aim to be our clients trusted business partners,” says senior partner, David Boyce.
Core practice areas are a little more traditional, comprising corporate, commercial property, litigation and private client, although within these headings are specialist practices in insolvency, technology, liquor licensing and planning. Some of the other qualities required of its lawyers are a little more mainstream too.
“We are reported to be friendly and approachable, even when under pressure!” Boyce says. “Our culture is challenging, hard-working, commercial, client-orientated and fun. We aspire to be the best.”
