Scottish law firms are not particularly renowned for the international opportunities they provide, but Ledingham Chalmers can potentially offer lawyers an experience unmatched by any other firm in the whole of the UK – the chance to work in the Falkland Islands. The firm also has outposts in Baku (Azerbaijan) and Istanbul. In Scotland, the choice of location is a little more conventional, being between its headquarters in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Inverness.

The reason behind Ledingham Chalmers’ diverse geographical representation is its major specialisation – the oil and gas industry, which accounts for more than a third of the firm’s workload. Beyond the energy industry, the next biggest practice areas by turnover are commercial property (which includes a highly rated social housing team) and litigation.

The firm provides corporate, project finance, employment, contentious and non-contentious construction, IT and insolvency advice to both its energy clients and others too. It also offers private client services, including residential property conveyancing.

Created by the merger of Aberdeen stalwarts Edmonds & Ledingham and C & PN Chalmers in 1991, Ledingham Chalmers now has 23 partners and 44 other fee-earners in the UK. To join them, candidates will need to demonstrate that they can fit in with the firm’s entrepreneurial and ‘can-do’ culture and are, or can develop into, rounded business lawyers able to produce pragmatic solutions.

Equally important are a commitment to and delivery of the firm’s values: quality, integrity, value for money, excellence and responsibility. Enthusiasm is a must, as are reliability and technical skills, but the clincher is likely to be personality. The firm makes a point to go looking for interesting people and a candidate's interpersonal skills and life outside work are likely to prove equally as important as legal skills when applications are assessed.
