Mitchells Roberton – Glasgow’s oldest law firm, with a history going back 250 years – is probably best known for its private client practice. However, the firm has a number of other significant strings to its bow.
It offers services in commercial property (where it acts for the institutional investors), security work and debt recovery for banks, litigation and pensions, as well as more general commercial advice for local SME's, which includes a specialist employment team. The private client practice, meanwhile, provides advice on tax, trusts and estates as well as family law and the firm also offers financial planning advice, estate agency and residential conveyancing.
Now 8 partners and 17 other fee-earners strong, Mitchells Roberton’s immediate plans are to consolidate and build what it has already achieved rather than speculative expansion. Chairman, Donald Reid, does point out, however, that the firm is happy to take opportunities when they arise, such as the recent appointment of pensions partner, Andrew Fleming.
Potential recruits will need to be able to fit in with both the firm’s professional culture, which emphasises a straightforward approach and personal service and its internal ethos, which is egalitarian.
“Being a hot-shot lawyer is less important to us than personable-ness and having a concern for people,” says Reid.
“We take a practical approach and we try to impress clients with our commitment rather than being the last word in legal expertise. The other quality we look for is humility – an awareness that lawyers are just ordinary people who are no more important than anyone else.”
