A revamp of O2's legal team has seen the mobile phone company scrap its general counsel and appoint Clifford Chance and Herbert Smith as the firm's only European legal advisors.
It is understood that O2 chose the firms from a list of a number of large companies following a review of the company's legal structure.
The move will see general counsel Justine Campbell step down from her role in the next few months, with her responsibilities then being shared between the UK and parent company Telefonica's offices in Madrid.
Campbell has held her position at the firm since 2006, when she took over from Philip Bramwell after Telefonica's takeover.
In related news, it has emerged that Nuala Cosgrove is to leave her legal job at the Guardian and take on a role at media regulator Ofcom.
Ms Cosgrove will be reporting to Ofcom general counsel Polly Weitzman when she joins the body in the New Year.
