The government has announced a new study into the funding and provision of local legal advice.
Justice minister Lord Bach has commissioned the report, which will focus on the impact of the recession on the demand for civil legal advice across England and Wales, as well as the effect fixed fees for advice is having on local providers from a financial and workload standpoint.
Other issues, such as the experience of community legal advice centres and trends in the sources of funding will also be covered.
"Legal aid is one of the fundamental elements underpinning the justice system and an important way of helping poorer members of the community," Lord Bach explained, noting that the report will ensure the government is making the best possible use of the available resources.
Herbert Smith was recently recognised in the Guardian's annual Public Service Awards, picking up an accolade for its volunteering and pro bono work.
