Lawyers specialising in divorce have started their busiest week at work, it has been claimed.
Divorce lawyer at Manches James Stewart said that Christmas can the "final straw" for many unhappy husbands and wives.
"The double whammy of Christmas and the credit crunch will make the first full week of January one of the busiest ever," he stated.
In fact, the first of Monday of the New Year is often named D-Day, or Divorce Day, by lawyers.
And according to a new survey from InsideDivorce.com, two million couples are encountering relationship difficulties after the stress of the festive season, while 1.3 million of these couples are considering ending their marriage for good.
Recently, the Children and Family Court Advisory Support Service suggested that new rules allowing the media into family courts will improve the public's perception of the legal system.
The decision by justice secretary Jack Straw to improve the media's access to such cases will mean the public will have a greater understanding of how decisions are reached, the body said.
