Lucy Reed has been given the new role of co-head of international arbitration at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
Ms Reed previously headed up the US international arbitration and public international law practice but this month takes up the new position alongside Jan Paulsson.
Mr Paulsson is dividing his time between teaching at the University of Dundee and Freshfields and welcomed the appointment.
"Lucy has succeeded in managing the spectacular expansion of our US arbitration practice while maintaining the highest standards of excellence and collegiality," he said, adding: "I'm proud that she has accepted to share global responsibility."
Ms Reed specialises in investment treaty disputes and is currently the president of the American Society of International Law.
Freshfields recently revealed that Chris Pugh had been appointed as the new global practice group leader at the firm's dispute resolution group, a role he was to take up on January 1st of this year.
