Could you improve access to justice for the people of St Helena and contribute to the realisation of human rights awareness?
A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK, poised for transformation with the construction of an airport due to be operational in early 2016. The island has its own legal system and legislature based on English law.
There are currently no lawyers in private practice in St Helena, so you will be the sole source of independent legal advice and assistance to individuals and to firms, corporations and nongovernmental organisations.
You will be supported by a trainee solicitor and by a UK qualified solicitor on Ascension Island on a consultancy basis. The ability to give sound defence advice including out-of-hours arrests is essential, as is advocacy. The post is a public office reporting directly to the Governor, but case working independence is guaranteed by law. You will appoint, train, assist and supervise the island’s Lay Advocates, devising and delivering a programme of training to develop their knowledge and skills. You will also act as Secretary to the St. Helena Society of Lawyers and Advocates. Under current legislation, you will also administer the legal aid system.
As a solicitor qualified in England and Wales (or with a comparable qualification in Scotland, Northern Ireland, or a Commonwealth or EU jurisdiction) you will have substantial experience of both civil and criminal work, including advocacy, and be eligible to train a trainee under the relevant (English) Law Society rules. You must hold a current practising certificate or equivalent, depending upon your professional qualification.
We offer an extensive benefits package with 30 days leave p.a. and which will include a contributory pension plus generous income tax-free allowances for relocation, rent and utilities
Interview Date - 8th December.
