The Head of Costs Unit / Costs Lawyer role

As part of those developments we’ve introduced a brand new role which will help shape the future of our claims department.

We need a Head of Costs Unit / Costs Lawyer to work as part of our established Claims Delivery team in Leeds.

The purpose of this Head of Costs Unit / Costs Lawyer role is twofold – as a Technical Unit Leader, the jobholder will provide leadership for and undertake line management responsibility of the Costs Unit whilst ensuing costs data is collected, maintained and reported in order to identify trends and to enable the Unit to provide costs advice to the claims teams. As a Costs Lawyer, the successful candidate will provide an in-house specialist service for the claims team, be responsible for analysing claims for costs; to negotiate and settle costs with Claimant firms and where necessary advocate at hearings on behalf of MPS. You will also support the review and audit of our panel lawyers’ fees. Additional duties will include minimising reliance on external input and enhance the speed and efficiency in which costs claims are concluded. 

Person Specification

You’ll need to be a qualified Costs Lawyer with current practising certificate and a member of the Association of Costs Lawyers to work as part of our established Claims Policy and Technical Department within our Professional Services Division of our Leeds office. You’ll need substantial experience of dealing with clinical negligence costs claims and the competence and the ability to critically review information and take a proactive and strategic approach to costs negotiation. Experience of leading a comparable claims operation / service delivery team in a legal or insurance environment is essential as is a proven track record of delivering excellent internal customer and external member service. You will act as a knowledgeable and effective technical expert for in house costs negotiators and wider claims management team and strive to develop and maintain a high profile for the MPS Costs Unit in the legal market place.
