Regulatory Legal Adviser

Central London

An opportunity for a qualified lawyer with regulatory experience and a desire to take on more commercial work to influence the UK's industrial strategy in the Oil and Gas Market.

Details about the Client

Investment into the oil and gas industry continues to rise but increasing challenges in exploration and production means efficiency, resourcing and collaboration between organisations are paramount to maximising the economic recovery of the Industry. It is with this strategy in mind that the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) came into fruition in April 2015. Set up as an independent body accountable to the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) the OGA will be unique amongst government organisations not only acting as a steward but with the objective of making a commercial impact on the market targeted at adding £200billion to the UK economy over the next 20 years.

Detailed Job Description

Still in its development stages, the OGA is looking to grow its legal team with the addition of a Legal Adviser to be based in central London. Reporting to the General Counsel you will work closely with internal stakeholders, the technical teams, policy department, industry figures and government representatives offering complex legal advice on matters relating to the implementation of projects, licensing, compliance, and procedural policy. Working as part of a small but critical team you will be expected to offer an unusually commercial perspective on both internal and external issues and assist with the ongoing driving and guidance of this new regime.

Candidate's Profile

The ideal candidate will be a fully qualified barrister or solicitor keen to develop their understanding of public law or UK'S and onshore petroleum licensing law in a commercial context. Alternatively, we would be keen to hear from candidates with either:

  • Regulatory or competition law experience,
  • Energy industry experience,
  • A commercial background but with an interest in Public and/or EU law.

Further to the technical experience, it is critical that the successful candidate is able to demonstrate their confidence and ability to influence at a senior level, a commercial approach to problem solving and the ability to make strong, well-considered decisions.

What's on offer

If you are keen to rise to the challenge of helping to deliver one of the government's key economic strategies and take ownership of the role you will have to play we want to hear from you.
