The role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Legal Counsel. This new position will be working within our Legal team based in our modern head office in Coventry. The primary purpose of the position is to protect the interests of the Company and of related Group companies by the giving of reactive and proactive legal advice as required on general commercial contractual and compliance matters, to include where required drafting, negotiation, policy drafting, training and dispute resolution.
The main responsibilities of the role include:
- Giving general commercial law advice on a broad range of matters to different business areas within the Company and related Group companies to enable those business areas to operate in the most effective manner within the law.
- Governance and compliance work with particular emphasis on Competition law, Data Protection Law, Financial Services Law and Consumer Rights Act compliance, monitoring, advising on and reacting to legislative and regulatory changes affecting the business of the Company and related Group companies in the UK. Carrying out contract reviews and drafting in relation to tenders and other contracts for Fleet and Parts and Service Departments for supplies to customers and advising internal stakeholders on the best contractual means of protecting the interests of or enforcing the rights of the business.
- In conjunction with the Company’s Purchasing Department, negotiating and drafting contracts with suppliers, business partners and others relating to the activities of the business, and advising internal stakeholders on the best contractual means of protecting the interests of or enforcing the rights of the business.
- Assisting the Head of Legal / Company Secretary in ensuring that the distribution and sales activities of the business comply with the requirements of competition law.
- Reviewing proposed marketing and advertising material for compliance with applicable laws, codes of practice and Group norms and working with internal and external stakeholders to make necessary changes in a timely, pragmatic and effective way.
- Giving pre-contentious legal advice to internal clients with a view to resolving disputes with customers, suppliers, dealers and others quickly and effectively.
- Advising the Legal Department in France as required from time to time on particular aspects of UK law and supporting advice in relation to Group initiatives and project and assisting with the adapting of central contracts for local law requirements.
- Additionally supporting Head of Legal/Company Secretary in company secretarial work.
- Supporting on various projects of the Company.
- Assisting Head of Legal/Company Secretary in instruction of external legal counsel.

Who we look for
The successful Legal Counsel needs a sound general knowledge of the law, keen analytical skills, excellent communication and persuasive skills (both written and oral) and the self-confidence and approachable nature necessary to deal effectively with people at all levels of the organisation, both in the UK and in France. The Legal Counsel needs to be pragmatic and commercial in approach, and solutions-driven, not afraid of getting involved, not afraid of responsibility, and not afraid of stepping outside his or her comfort-zone. Flexibility and adaptability are very important.
Some basic background knowledge (to GCSE level or equivalent) of French together with the aptitude/willingness to improve would be desirable.
The successful Legal Counsel needs to be a solicitor admitted in England and Wales.
At least three to five years’ post qualification experience as a solicitor working either in-house or from a reputable national private practice firm. Should have general commercial and consumer law experience (including commercial contracts, data protection, competition law); some knowledge of consumer credit and financial services generally would be desirable.
