Legal Counsel (technology) position for a leading global digital media business, in Central London. As Legal Counsel within the IP/IT legal team within the companies global headquarters you will be dedicated to supporting the Group IT function in relation to each stage of large-scale procurement agreements, licensing and complex outsourcing projects.
Additionally, you will be assisting the Groups brands in relation to media owner relationships, commercial agreements, compliance strategies and overall legal structure and strategy, providing legal and strategic advice on intellectual property law and data protection laws to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and protection of the Group's commercial interests, assisting with Group wide post integration strategy and delivery, assisting in the delivery of the Group's operating model, working with brands and markets to help deliver the key strategic goals for growth and delivery and developing technology - and IP-related legal principles and processes to standardise Group conduct and expectations in these areas.
The Legal Counsel (technology) role:
- Drafting, negotiating and advising on potentially complex and global IT supply and service agreements, e-commerce, outsourcing and licensing agreements
- Providing legal and strategic advice to stakeholders at various levels of the organisation (including executive-level boards and committees) on relevant subjects such as intellectual property law (trademarks, copyright, patents, trade secrets) and data protection to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and protection of the Group's commercial interests (Global functions, Regional and Country level management)
- Providing legal guidance and negotiation support in relation to development and deployment of new digital media initiatives and media owner partnerships.
- Providing support on technology and IP matters to commercial teams in contractual negotiations with clients and media owners in order to achieve the most advantageous and/or beneficial legal and commercial terms for the Group.
- Developing and delivering training and legal risk management initiatives to assist senior management in strategically managing legal risks (e.g. business training, legal updates, etc) in order to ensure a consistent Group-wide approach to contracts, technology and IP.
- Counselling and conducting training on contract processes, templates, negotiation skills, contract compliance and Group policies.
- As the team grows and more junior lawyers are recruited, managing subordinate lawyers in related disciplines such as data protection, media owners, M&A integration, technology, and IP, including acting as a role-model for such individuals and supervising their professional and functional development objectives.
You:
- Lawyer qualified in England and Wales, with a minimum of 2 years PQE* experience and a majority of this time gaining significant expertise in relation to technology
- be commercially-minded and have excellent communication and inter-personal skills to enable the individual to work with all levels of internal management and negotiate with external clients
- possess well-developed prioritisation skills given the likelihood of dealing with multiple projects and internal clients at any one time
- be able to work autonomously, take initiative and be pro-active on addressing new matters or challenges
- have a pleasant but firm personality and be able to work in a cross-cultural environment
- have a passion for the industry, with a demonstrated ability to show leadership (in terms of negotiation, drafting and strategic approach) on commercial transactions
- be confident to explain and clearly communicate on matters that involve board-level and senior management attention
- strong commercial and business acumen that allows the individual to efficiently and expeditiously compare the relevant legal risks to the scope of commercial strategy and corporate objectives
- Note, technology experience is essential. Prior IP experience is not essential.
