We work seamlessly to provide clients with complementary legal advice covering all aspects of law.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a talented individual to join our successful and expanding Corporate and Commercial team, based within any of our 4 locations. The role may also require occasional travel to one of our other locations or off-site as client demands require.
Our experienced Corporate and Commercial team provide expert advice to organisations, no matter the size, on a range of issues that may affect it positively or negatively. We act for clients both nationally and internationally.
The successful candidate will likely be a solicitor with 2+ years’ post-qualification experience and expertise in Information Management and Data Protection. The role will be within our Corporate and Commercial team but also working closely with our Education team and other areas of the business as required.
The successful candidate will have trained within a well-regarded City or regional practice. Guidance and direction is available from more senior members of the Team on more complex matters.
The candidate
The ideal candidate will have a Commercial/ IP/ Data Protection background with particular experience in Data Protection and Information Management where possible and a knowledge and understanding of the other areas in which we work. This role is predominantly client facing and the candidate will need to have an appreciation of the issues facing our clients in the current market and how they can support clients in addressing those issues.
Candidates must be technically excellent but equally important, commercially aware and enthusiastic about business development. They will be a team player with a strong client focused approach and excellent communication and organisational skills.
The role
Fee Earning
Knowledge and an understanding of the following areas of law would be desirable:
- The Education (Pupil Information) Regulations 2005 and the parental right to the educational records in maintained schools.
The Independent School Standards Regulations 2014. - Capacity under the Data Protection Act, parental responsibility and parental rights to involvement in the education of their children.
- Subject access requests in an education context, particularly where there are child protection concerns including knowledge of the Data Protection (Subject Access Modification) (Social Work) Order 2000 and the Data Protection (Subject Access Modification) (Education) Order 2000.
- ICO’s CCTV Code of Practice, the ICO’s Employment Practices Code and the ICO’s Privacy Impact Assessment Code of Practice.
- The Data Protection Act and Freedom of Information Act.
- Dealing with subject access requests, section 10 Notices, notification with the ICO, appeals to the Information Tribunal.
- Applying data protection principles to the work of an organisation.
- The impact of technology on the legislation and how organisations have to react to that.
- Experience of dealing with complaints to the ICO.
Training
- Support the delivery of training to key clients including suggesting topics, developing of materials and presenting to clients.
Marketing and Business Development
- Work proactively with client teams and Business Development to develop and deliver useful intelligence, product streams and know how strategies.
- Assist in the preparation of articles and updates for clients. Attend client events, including but not limited to marketing events, briefings, presentations and catch ups.
- Media & PR: identify newsworthy legal and market developments which can be exploited for PR purposes.
- Work with Business Development on Bids (client and product information).
- Develop and maintain value-add materials for key clients.
Additional Requirements
Our environment is positive and supportive but often highly pressurised due to external deadlines and volume of work. We need someone who is pro-active and able to manage potential pressure.

The candidate should be well-organised, technologically proficient and capable of working on their own or within a team. They will also be required where necessary to provide supervision to more junior members of the team.
Exceptional “client facing” and other interpersonal skills will be vital, together with a capacity to work autonomously. The ability to work in harmony with others and to contribute to a focused working ethos will also be important.

Reporting
The post-holder will report on a day-to-day basis to the Corporate and Commercial Partners and overall to the Head of the Corporate and Commercial Team. The role will be based within any of our 4 office locations but will be required to liaise frequently with colleagues in our other offices.
Office hours – 9.00am - 5.30pm. Part time or flexible working hours could be considered. We are also open to flexibility regarding the total number of hours per week.
