A prestigious law firm handling primarily high net worth Clients (wealthy families who normally have a number of family trusts and grant making charitable trusts) is looking to hire a senior individual into the Trust and Tax section of the Private Client department. The candidate will be managing an established portfolio of clients and will work closely with the Head of the section, . A general understanding of relevant legal issues will be required although it is likely that the person recruited will be from an accountancy or tax/ trust background rather than being a solicitor.
Private Client is a huge aspect of this law firm's work making up 60% of its income and is based near Chancery Lane
The Private Client Department
This department has two sections, the legal section and the trust and tax section. The legal section consists of solicitors and legal executives, and the trust and tax section comprises of qualified and unqualified trust and tax accountants and practitioners.Both work very closely together and the trust and tax section is not just carrying out routine compliance work and trust administration for clients, but is part of a team providing a proactive and all round service.
There are currently seven partners, four consultants, six assistant solicitors, two legal executives and one trainee solicitor in the legal section of the department. In addition to dealing with the legal requirements of their clients this section is also responsible for the department's estate administration processes
The Trust and Tax Section
The department comprises of one principal (head of section), five managers, four of whom specialise in trust administration and one who specialises in personal tax, one trust accountant, two trust trainees and four support staff. The day to day trust administration and tax work is carried out by the principal and managers with the assistance of other staff. In addition to direct involvement in the trust and tax administration and compliance, the principal and managers deal with more specialised and complex work involving close liaison with clients.
The role
The new Trust Manager will take over an established portfolio of client matters and their ultimate responsibility will be for ensuring the proper completion of non legal work working closely with the principal and managers.
In the majority of trust matters dealt with by the section the trust accountancy and tax compliance is dealt with in-house. The section uses specific Trust Accounts and Tax software. The successful candidate should preferably possess a working knowledge of both systems. Details can be supplied.
Although the majority of their clients are UK resident and domiciled, there is a substantial offshore, foreign and international aspect to the practice. A number of family members are often involved, either as trustees or beneficiaries, and it is important to maintain their respect and confidence. The firm act for both enterpreneurs who have generated their own wealth, and families whose assets have accumulated over the generations
The firm are looking for an individual who has a good all round knowledge of the type of work detailed in the above and must also be able to assume the responsibility for dealing directly with clients and managing their trusts and financial affairs, working alongside partners and others in the department.

An ability to work with our private client lawyers and other professionals within and outside this firm
Achieve minimum time targets (1300 chargeable hours per annum) and meet regular billing requirements
Ability to keep abreast with changes in legislation and market developments
Strong numerical aptitude and a familiarity with accountancy disciplines
High degree of knowledge of the management of family and private charitable trusts.
High degree of knowledge of the taxation of trusts
A knowledge of the UK taxation of offshore trusts
An understanding of personal taxation matters
A working knowledge of indirect taxation matters
Financial awareness including an understanding of financial instruments and products ( e.g quoted investments, cash instruments, pensions, insurance products, hedge funds, property etc)
An understanding of estate administration and taxation matters
Appropriate professional qualification(s), preferably with a minimum of 8 years' relevant experience
