PUBLIC LAW AND REGULATORY SOLICITOR / ASSOCIATE NQ-3 MANCHESTER

Public Law and Regulatory Solicitor / Associate – An exciting opportunity has arisen with the Manchester office of this leading national practice for a lawyer looking to really develop their career within public law with a particular focus on such areas as regulatory work and judicial review. The public law team forms part of the larger public projects department which service a range of general public sector quasi-public sector and healthcare clients.

THE ROLE AT A GLANCE

  • Job title: Public Law Solicitor / Associate NQ-3 PQE
  • Location: Manchester
  • Salary: £40,000 - £50,000
  • Reports to: Partner
  • Previous Experience: Anyone with previous experience of areas such a judicial review and regulatory work whether on their training contract or who can demonstrate a genuine interest in the area. The role has a litigious and advisory element with most of the litigious work coming from judicial review cases. That said our client encourages applications from a broad spread of backgrounds including general commercial.

THE WORK IN CONTEXT

Our client advises a very broad client base, from central and local government and quasi-public institutions to organisations who operate in the public sector, such as in healthcare and social care. The team also advises private sector companies who operate within the public sector.

In terms of the actual work, the department advises on everything from commercial law including large commercial projects work such as joint ventures and procurement and outsourcing to regulatory matters involving judicial review and other highly complex areas of public law.

They are looking for a solicitor from NQ – 3 PQE preferably with a background in public law  and judicial review to handle a mixture of contentious and advisory work. There will also be the opportunity to liaise with and support other areas of the department who handle the more commercial work.

BLEND OF CONTENTIOUS AND ADVISORY REGULATORY AND PUBLIC LAW

The contentious elements of the work will centre around judicial review and will draw on other areas, such as human rights. However, it will also involve disputes arising over other matters, such as procurement contracts as well as Information Rights Tribunal Hearings.

Moreover, there will be a significant non-contentious, advisory element particularly in relation to governance issues and interpreting statute. Our client advises organisations on drafting their own internal charters and developing their internal procedures and processes to ensure they observe all aspects of the law.

RECRUITING THE RIGHT CANDIDATE

Public law, especially areas such as judicial review are highly technical areas of ‘black letter’ law. Our client is looking for bright, capable ambitious candidates with real passion for this area of practice. It is worth noting that this area of law also involves an appreciation of the political nuances at play in the public sector.

Candidates who have already gained some experience of public law whether on qualification or during a seat on their training contract, will be at an advantage. However, it should be stressed that out client wishes to draw applications from a broad variety of candidates. So those who have a genuine interest in this discipline should also consider applying.

This is a highly dynamic area of law with a variety of high quality work to challenge, excite and reward.
