Assistant City Solicitor required for an initial 3 month period to join a Local Authority based in West Yorkshire.
The ideal candidate will Act as Deputy Monitoring Officer of the Local Government and proactively lead and develop legal issues within the corporate governance framework of the Council and provide advice and guidance on legal related matters. The Assistant City Solicitor will also be responsible for the following duties:
- To provide advice and assistance to elected members of the Council and the Town/Parish Councils in the District regarding compliance with the Code of Conduct for Members and any related complaints.
- Leading in the development of more effective working relationships between clients and lawyers providing advice.
- Taking the lead in the development of corporate management strategies and initiatives linked to legal services.
- Responsible for arrangements for the affixing and the safe custody of the Councils Common Seal and witnessing the sealing of legal documents.
- The allocation and prioritisation of legal services resources which reflects the Council's corporate priorities and objectives.
- To manage and advocate, where appropriate, in complex and/or sensitive legal cases.
- To work with the City Solicitor on the council's budget setting process in relation to legal services.
- Acting as Chair of meetings undertaken within JCC arrangements.
- Develop collaborative arrangements with other public and private bodies in order to deliver effective and efficient service delivery.

- Commercial outlook/approach
- Significant experience of local government law across the range of Council functions at a senior level
- Breadth of management experience
- Good knowledge of constitutional and governance requirements, including dealing with complaints against Councillors
- Significant negotiation and communication skills
- Ability to work in and manage teams
- Experience of income generation/implementation of specialist case management systems
- Credibility with stakeholders and a "can do" approach.
