What sort of person were looking for
The Walker Morris Construction team has achieved an enviable reputation over many years having been involved in a number of high profile construction projects both in the UK and overseas. Covering both contentious and non-contentious work, the team excels at giving technical yet practical advice, taking into account the commercial realities under which our clients operate.
We consider the strength and depth of the team make it one of the top UK construction teams. The team regularly advises on large scale projects for the commercial, public and PFI markets covering the full range of construction contracts, warranties, appointments, bonds and parent company guarantees.
The contentious arm of the team is highly regarded and has had several successes in the courts most notably in the highly publicised dispute in relation to the Wembley Stadium project. As a result of which they were nominated for the Legal Business Litigation team of the year at the start of 2005.
The team certainly punches above its weight and despite not being the largest construction team in the region, the quality and quantity of work certainly rivals that of any of its competitors.
We are looking for individuals that can provide first class practical advice to our clients and who will continue the rapid growth of the Unit.
Recent examples of the teams works includes:
Non-contentious
Acting for Sterling St James on the construction of a 750,000sq ft distribution warehouse over £30m in value.
Instructed by Reland Properties Limited (part of Gladedale Homes) on two major multiphase redevelopments valued in excess of £500m.
Acting on all of Unite Group Plc's design and build construction work.
Continue to advise Bury College on 6 different phases of the redevelopment of their campus. Overall construction costs are in excess of £30m.
Tameside College - £85 million land disposal, procurement, funding and construction advice.
Burnley College - £80 million land disposal, acquisition, procurement funding and construction advice.
Acted for Barratt Homes on the construction of a 12 storey residential apartment block in Leeds City Centre [value is confidential however this is a major scheme].
Continue to act for Priority Sites on all their construction work.
Contentious
Representing Cleveland Bridge in the Canary Wharf Crane collapse litigations case, Cleveland Bridge UK Ltd, and the Yarm Road Ltd v Hewden Tower Cranes Ltd. The matter was settled for an undisclosed figure.
Representing the same client on the Wembley Stadium litigation against Multiplex Construction UK Ltd. A number of adjudications have taken place resulting in a net benefit to Cleveland of £5million. High court proceedings have now been issued and re expected to be heard in early 2006 in the TCC in London.
Successfully representing Hurst Stores & Interiors Ltd in their reported case against Merrill Lynch Property Ltd, which went to the Court of Appeal in April 2004.
Successfully defending Unite Group plc in the reported case brought by P4
The team continuously act on adjudications ranging from small values to multi million pound disputes
The team have recently been instructed on 2 separate multi million pound professional negligence claims.
Where the applicant will fit in
We ideally want individuals at 2-3 year level. The range of work would cover both contentious and non contentious. The contentious work would primarily involve supporting our partners on the substantial disputes, be it adjudication, mediation, arbitration or High Court. The individual would also be given responsibility to run small to medium sized disputes.
On the non contentious side, the work will primarily involve acting for developers and banks on commercial developments. However, there will also be the opportunity to work on public sector projects.

Training and support is available throughout the department. The team work closely together and supervise the less experienced members of staff. Training also takes place on a more formal basis with external and internal training sessions, appraisals and development reviews. Solicitors are therefore able to experience a mix of work if they wish and develop in a different area to their current experience and skills.
Necessary qualifications
NQ-5 year pqe (but will consider anyone who can demonstrate the skills and knowledge we are looking for.
