Corporate Associate - 2-4 years PQE (Specialising in Transport Projects/Contracts) - London

General information:

The Corporate division comprises of 6 main groups which consist of between 6 and 10 partners, together with associates, trainees and paralegals.

The bulk of each group’s practice comprises take-overs, mergers and acquisitions and other transactions such as demergers, reorganisations, flotations and joint ventures.

In addition, there are a number of different focus areas which include:

• Insurance, investment funds and financial services;
• Private equity and venture capital;
• International equity offerings and equity capital markets;
• Energy and resources, utilities, projects.
• Information Technology and Communications.

The role

This is an excellent opportunity for talented and motivated associates to join a thriving and growing practice whose reputation has really taken off. For instance, Legal 500 recently moved us from band 3 to band 1 for rail, and Chambers from band 3 to band 2. We probably now have the leading UK rail practice. On the projects side, we act for London & Continental Railways in relation to the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, Transport for London in relation to the East London Line Extensions and London Underground in relation to all its PPP and PFI projects. On the passenger rail franchising side we have acted for a wide range of train operators including Stagecoach, Virgin, Arriva and Serco/NedRail. On the roads side, we acted for the Highways Agency on the recently closed National Roads Telecommunications Service project. We also act for Tyne & Wear PTA on the New Tyne Crossing tunnel project and Halton council on the New Mersey Crossing bridge project.
Increasingly, we are looking to expand the transport practice outside the UK and have already acted on a rail project in Holland and roads projects in Portugal. Our areas of focus outside Europe are China, Russia and the Middle East.

Experience required

What are we looking for?

• Associates, ideally in the region of 2-4 years PQE involved in or keen to become involved in the transport sector;

The following types of experience would be a bonus:

- The contractual structure of the UK rail industry, for instance franchise agreements, access arrangements, rolling stock arrangements;
- UK rail regulation;
- Infrastructure project structures, for instance under UK PFI/PPP;
- Significant hands-on transactional experience;
- Bright self-starters looking for a challenge;
- All candidates will be expected to display excellent interpersonal skills and be able to communicate with individuals at all levels.
