Database Administrator - Birmingham - Job Description

MS-SQL Data Base Administration and ancillary support of key database, archiving and storage related operational processes.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Technical responsibility for the firms MS-SQL Database environment with respect to:
• Initial Database installation and setup, plus database moves between servers and system upgrades.
• Recoverability - Creating and testing MS-SQL backups in conjunction with the IT network team.
• Integrity - Verification of data integrity as and when required.
• Maintenance – creation and scheduling of MS-SQL maintenance jobs as agreed with system sponsors.
• Security - Implementing access controls to the data and, in conjunction with other member of the IT department, assist with determining database access control policies.
• Availability - Ensuring maximum database uptime; for example through the use of Clustering and Replication models.
• Performance - Ensuring maximum performance with given budgetary and technical infrastructure constraints
• In conjunction with other members of the IT department, and with particular respect to MS-SQL database systems, provide Disaster Recovery (DR) services with respect to planning and testing of the firms DR policies and procedures.
• Provide pro-active monitoring of the firms database systems and environment. This will also include critical systems which make extensive use of MS-SQL.
• In conjunction with the firms IT Architecture, Network and Software teams; Design, implement and maintain the operational aspects of the firms strategy for:
• Storage capacity planning
• Database and storage archiving solutions for data and document management systems
• Provide technical assistance and support to other teams within the organisation who make extensive use of MS-SQL.
• Development and testing support - Assisting programmers, developers and other members of the IT department to efficiently utilize the databases within their projects.
• Maintain up to date documentation of the firm’s database infrastructure.
• Assist with the on going development of firm wide database policies and procedures.
• Retain current proficiency with database technology developments with the technical arena.

Any other reasonable duties delegated by any Partner, Senior Manager of the firm or Group Co-ordinator.

Person Specification:

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential:

• Computing Degree, or equivalent qualification and experience.
• 2 years experience of extensive administration and management of MS-SQL databases.

Desirable:

• Microsoft Certified DBA (SQL 2000)
• Microsoft Certified IT Professional (SQL2005 DBA/Developer/BI Developer)
• Microsoft Technology Specialist (SQL Server 2005)
• Experience with storage and archival processes
• Experience within a professional services organisation.
