Associate Imam Qazi leads the Islamic finance team at Burges Salmon which draws in expertise from various practice areas including property, banking, corporate finance, tax and trusts, pensions and insurance. The firm wide structure is client focused and enables the firm to seamlessly deliver clear advice on a wide range of projects and complex transactions.
The team is small and all members are engaged in conventional as well as Shariah work. We are in a strong developmental phase and as such there is scope for the recruit to be actively involved in shaping the growth of the practice area.
Work
The primary focus of the Islamic finance unit at Burges Salmon to date has been on Shariah compliant real estate finance and investment. Other key and growing areas include general banking and finance, trusts and pensions. In addition, we have identified Takaful (Islamic insurance), corporate finance, and Sukuk (Islamic securitisation) as important new areas for the growth of the practice. Recent work has included:
• Developing Shariah compliant commercial property finance products for Bristol & West Property Finance and ABC International Bank.
• Acting on the sale of Meudon House for £23m to the Amanah Global Property Fund including resolving tax issues on the ljarah structure.
• Developing trade finance documentation for Islamic Bank of Britain Plc.
• Restructuring a land holding in France including structured lending for tax and Shariah purposes.
• Shariah compliant refinancing of a hospital in Kent and two investment properties on Edgware Road and Hounslow High Street in London.
• Acting for HSBC Bank Plc on a review of Shariah compliant security documentation.
• Preparation of over 300 Shariah aware offshore trusts.
• Drafting Shariah compliant employee benefit trusts for numerous SMEs.
• Advising 1st Ethical on the setting up of their corporate Musharakah (venture capital) fund.
• Dealing with various Shariah compliant pensions.
Requirements
An exciting and varied role has evolved for a solicitor to either build upon their existing experience in Islamic finance work or gain experience in this expanding field.
The successful candidate will show commitment to the role and genuine enthusiasm for the growth of the Shariah practice.
