Legal Adviser - Job Description
The Gambling Commission regulates most commercial gambling in Great Britain, including arcades, betting, bingo, casinos, lotteries, gaming machines and remote gambling. The Commission’s objectives are to keep crime out of gambling, to ensure that gambling is conducted fairly and openly and to protect children and vulnerable people from being harmed or exploited by gambling.
The Commission now seeks to appoint a Legal Adviser to assist in providing advice to the Commission on its powers and finding available routes to help the Commission to be more effective. This strategic role is also hands on in terms of day-to-day advice both in resolving problems and developing policy.
Managing a diverse caseload the majority of the work will be complex regulatory and policy advice with wider implications for the government, public and gambling industry. This will include acting as an adviser to the Regulatory Panel as well as advising on gambling law. The successful candidate will also advise on prosecutions under the Gambling Act 2005, as well as freedom of information and data protection, contract law and procurement issues.
The ideal candidate will be a solicitor or barrister with either public or private sector experience but with a clear understanding of the legal basis for the operation of a public sector body. Specific experience of public law together with the ability and confidence to provide legal advice across a range of disciplines will be required. An interest in gambling law would be an advantage.
In addition, strong communication and interpersonal skills will be necessary to build close working relationships at all levels in the Commission, with other groups in the regulated sector and with the Commission’s sponsoring department.
