Planning Lawyer - 3 – 5 years' PQE - Leeds - Job Description
We are seeking to recruit an experienced planning lawyer 3 – 5 PQE to join our team.
The successful candidate will come from a recognised private practice background preferably with local authority experience or from the public sector. You will be a team player with good communication skills and a strong practical approach to your workload with the ability to work proactively on your own. A sense of humour is essential.
A sound working knowledge of the following is required:-
- planning applications;
- development advice;
- local and structure plan representations;
- planning and other agreements;
- planning appeals (not necessarily advocacy);
- development plan work;
- industrial, commercial, retail, housing, hotels, leisure and mixed use developments;
- compulsory purchase, highways, historic buildings and conservation; and
- judicial reviews and other High Court proceedings.
In addition to the above, you will need:-
- an interest in the development and property market;
- to keep abreast of government thinking (e.g. current planning policy);
- to have commercial acumen in the practice of law;
- to be able to sift through information and distil the key issues quickly; and
- to identify when Counsel should be instructed to do all that is required to facilitate their role.
This will be a client facing role and as such you will be expected to take a business interest in the work or projects of your clients in order to focus accurately on the wider legal issues that potentially face them. Travel will be required and therefore you will need to have your own transport available.
You should have considerable experience of drafting and negotiating planning and highway agreements and planning/CPO/local plan inquiries and judicial review/High Court challenges.
Clients include local authorities, house builders, developers, as well as those in the retail sector.

Firm’s Role: Section 106 Agreements for
residential schemes.
Client Name: Redhouse Projects Limited
Firm’s Role: Advised on the development of Redhouse Park, a 52 hectare manufacturing and distribution park near Doncaster.
Client Name: Thorpe Park (Developments) Limited
Firm’s Role: A strategic 109 hectare development within Leeds Green Belt and adjacent to the new M1 extension. Incorporates 1.8m sq ft of high quality offices and the largest new park for Leeds in the 20th century.
Client Name: United Co-operatives
Firm’s Role: Judicial Review of retail
application.
Client Name: University of Leeds
Firm’s Role: Advice in relation to compulsory purchase proceedings pursuant to Transport and Works Act Order for land at Bodington, Leeds.
