Planning & Regeneration Team Solicitor - Birmingham - Job Description
Main Purpose of the Role:
Providing specialist advice to the public sector on large-scale redevelopment and regeneration projects.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Working within a dedicated team led by Andrew Galla and Stephen Sellers acting for broad range of clients; principally local authorities and developers, but also include housing associations and development agencies, providing legal services in complex transactions with a regeneration theme such as:
• Town / city centre redevelopment projects
• Area based regeneration schemes
• Brown field developments for residential and other uses
• Housing estate renewal, whether through ALMOs, PFI or other means.
• Planning and infrastructure
• Compulsory purchase
• Procurement and state aids
• Vires
• PFI
• Corporate joint ventures
• Property tax
• Education
• Housing.
Key Skills and Experience:
The ideal candidate will have proven experience of:
• assisting more experienced lawyers / undertaking personally / leading teams in advising on a range of transactions including:
- formal and informal tender documents and bid evaluations
- heads of terms
- exclusivity and collaboration agreements
- development agreements, agreements for lease, building agreements - with or without profit, overage and rent sharing arrangements
- joint ventures - contractual, corporate or though a partnership
- grant funding agreements with, eg, EP, the RDAs and Sport England
- agreements with key occupiers
- site assembly by private treaty or compulsory purchase, including options
- freehold and long leasehold disposals
- bespoke contracts in support of this type of project – eg, property management agreements.
• assisting with the ongoing development of junior team members
• being involved with team and firm-wide with practice development initiatives using a collaborative, co-operative and open approach;
• taking a active role in technical debate in your current or previous roles by contributing your knowledge both within and without the firm, for instance by publishing articles and/or by delivering presentations and training;
• establishing, developing and maintaining client relationships with and obtaining instructions from identified target and existing clients.
Competencies:
• Qualified solicitor
• Proven technical knowledge in chosen field
• Excellent organisation as well as time and project management skills
• Proven interpersonal skills and experience of marketing and client development
• Strong drafting negotiating and problem solving skills
• Well developed sense of commercial awareness
• Responsible for mentoring and supervising less experienced team members.
Recent Highlights:
• We are advising the Greater London Authority in relation to the 2012 London Olympics bid.
• We act for Cambridge City Council in connection with the 'Grand Arcade' - a £150 million, half a million square foot retail development in the city centre.
• Wycombe District Council instructed us on a £130 million, 635,000 square foot retail/leisure/residential development in the centre of High Wycombe.
• We are advising the Bournville Village Trust on its joint venture with English Partnerships to create a new urban village at Lightmoor, Telford to include housing, a new primary school, a community centre, small and medium-sized retail facilities, a family pub/restaurant and a village hall.
• We act for Croydon LBC on the long running proposals for the mixed-use redevelopment of the 15-acre 'Gateway' site at East Croydon station.
• We advised City of Bradford MDC on the £85 million refurbishment of the historic listed Lister Mills for use as flats, shops and offices.
• We act for Solihull MBC on the 15 year project to regenerate four wards in the north of Solihull, providing new shops and housing, health and education services, business and leisure facilities, transport and access to jobs.
• We are acting for Slough Borough Council in connection with the redevelopment of the 29 acre town centre 'Heart of Slough' site for use as offices, residential accommodation, retail, community facilities, a bus/rail passenger interchange, and a cultural quarter.
• We are acting for Sanctuary Housing Association in relation to a proposed £300 million voluntary transfer of social housing stock from Tower Hamlets Borough Council. The programme includes the refurbishment, demolition and new build of some 2,300 homes and involves gap funding from ODPM and other financial support from Ocean NDC.
• We are advising Southwark LBC on a residential led mixed use scheme at Canada Water with 2000 new homes, offices, live work space and community facilities.
