What is it that attracts bright young people into the legal profession and motivates them to stay with us? The prospect of participating in courtroom drama, the prospect of dealmaking at midnight, or possibly the prospect of making a difference in the way ordinary people deal with each other? Whatever the answer, it is unlikely that reality will match the dream precisely, because careers can take the most unexpected turns. Against that apparently uncertain background, how can a young lawyer prepare herself for the path ahead?
Our trainees are a pretty mixed bunch - which is a compliment! We have some straight from school then university and others with prior work experience, ranging from the Foreign Office to the academic world. All were however selected because we thought them interesting people and because we considered that they would not only develop well with us but also contribute to the blend of personalities in the firm. With technical expertise now taken for granted, interpersonal and social skills and a life outside work are undoubtedly qualities sought after by the astute recruiter who recognises that they can enhance any firm's profile, whether large city or small provincial.
