TotallyLegal salary surveyThe TotallyLegal Audience Insight Report revealed that our audience are building their careers in a vast range of practice areas.

The big hitters

The majority of our audience (16%) are currently working within Commercial law – up 2% year-on-year. With an uncertain political and economic future, businesses in the UK may be pumping money into their in-house legal teams.

Despite a 2% drop since last year, legal professionals working within Banking and Financial Services (12%) have outmanoeuvred a volatile industry wrought with business anxieties to retain their place in the second most popular practice area amongst our audience.

Rounding out the top five most occupied practice areas in 2018 were Corporate (7%), Litigation (6%) and Commercial Property (6%).

Despite a handful of switched places, the most popular practice areas within legal remained largely the same in 2018 as they did the year before – a trend that continued throughout the remaining, less common practice areas.

For example, respondents working in Private Client, Media / Entertainment and Clinical Negligence all remained steady at 2%.

Regulatory on the rise

Perhaps significantly, the number of individuals in our audience purporting careers in IT / Telecoms and Regulatory & Compliance saw yearly increases of 1% and 2% respectively. This growth can perhaps be attributed to the introduction of GDPR in May 2018 and the general tightening of regulations within the technology industry.
