Leading national financial services company, specialising in life & pensions is looking to add to their dynamic in-house legal team. This role can be based in their Edinburgh or Glasgow offices. 

The Role:

We are seeking a permanent Assistant Legal Counsel/junior lawyer or Paralegal to add to our busy in-house team. The successful candidate can be based in our Glasgow or Edinburgh office and will have had some experience either in-house or in private practice dealing with legal matters, including contracts and/or claims management and investigation. Experience in company secretarial and/or PI and other insurance management would also be an advantage. This role will also lead in identifying and implementing efficiencies within the Legal & Risk team, such as developing processes, databases/ management information, templates, guidance and providing internal training.

The role involves acting as an internal consultant and as such, will involve extensive dealings directly with the business.

Key responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will assist the Legal Counsel, Senior Legal Counsel and Head of Legal to:
  • Deal with a variety of legal matters, including assisting with contracts, tender responses, variation of contracts (including client engagement letters, e-business agreements)
  • Investigate and manage any potential complaints or claims against the firm, working closely with the business
  • Oversee company secretarial processes, maintaining statutory registers and Companies House filings for the firm and its Group and monitor changes in law
  • Manage the firms Professional Indemnity and other insurances, including in the development of presentations to brokers
  • Develop and maintain processes, databases / management information, templates and guidance for the firm and lead in the provision of internal training eg on contract review processes
  • Ensure that the firm complies with legislation, regulation and the requirements of professional bodies and other organisations, including interpreting the effect on the firm of any proposed changes to legislation
  • Provide a legal research service (as required) to the Legal & Risk team
  • Positively contribute to the Legal & Risk team – creating a professional, effective, high quality and approachable resource for the business

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Qualified solicitor or potentially an experienced commercial paralegal with appropriate experience/qualification
  • Relevant practice based and/or in-house experience, preferably in a FCA regulated environment
  • Exposure to the pensions or wider financial services industry (preferred but not essential)
  • Good working knowledge of IT systems preferred
  • Proven ability to deliver on projects and initiatives
  • Proven ability to come up with workable solutions
