Department Overview
The Regulatory department is a dedicated team of lawyers within group legal principally supporting the wider group. The department was created towards the end of 2010 in response to the heightened regulatory environment and the importance given to regulatory affairs by the bank’s senior management. The department is an advisory team within the wider EMEA group which co-ordinates and advises on a broad range of domestic, European and international regulatory issues and projects impacting the group with a variety of stakeholders within the bank.
The London based team in the department also supports the UK General Counsel’s office, in particular the London legal COO, in discharging its UK Territory obligations and provides general counsel and regulatory assistance and advice to senior management in the UK as well as the Boards of all of the bank’s regulated entities.
Key Responsibilities
Principally based in London, the candidate will work as part of a dedicated team of lawyers (two of whom are based in Paris) which has responsibility for the coordination, identification, analysis and dissemination of regulatory issues critically impacting the group’s business lines. The role involves the interpretation and analysis of existing and prospective legislation, regulatory policy developments and consultation papers, and identifying and assessing the impact and consequences for the group.
The successful legal counsel will be expected to work closely with relevant stakeholders in relation to the interpretation and practical implementation of new regulations and laws, including Compliance, Operations, Risk and Global Markets front office, but also with the relevant lawyers within legal globally.
The candidate will represent the department on both internal and external committees and industry led working groups and support the bank’s domestic and international advocacy efforts on regulatory issues working closely with our Regulatory Affairs teams at both department and group level.
The candidate will assist the department in advising on internally driven regulatory implementation projects (e.g. MiFID II and Benchmarks Regulation).
Essential Experience
- English Qualified Lawyer (or equivalent) with approximately 3 to 6 years PQE
- Trained and have practiced in the non-contentious regulatory practice of a magic circle law firm or equivalent
- Experience advising on financial services regulation affecting the UK/Europe, including MiFID/MiFID II, EMIR, FSMA and the FCA Handbook
- Experience in a non-contentious regulatory advisory capacity
- Strong capital markets product knowledge including derivatives
- Experience of managing external counsel
Essential Skills/Competencies
- Self-motivated and confident individual, able to manage a large and diverse workload and interact comfortably and convincingly with all levels of management within the bank
- Advising on major pieces of EU and UK financial services regulation, including MiFID/MiFID II, EMIR, FSMA and the FCA Handbook
- Outgoing and tenacious personality, capable of working both autonomously and as part of a cross-disciplinary and cross-border team
- Able to deal with a robust and demanding internal client base, including handling multiple matters simultaneously and meeting tight deadlines when required
- Ability to assimilate and digest quickly a myriad of complex legal and regulatory materials
