The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is the UK’s world- leading government body established to promote competition for the benefit of consumers, both within and outside the UK. Our aim is to make markets work well for consumers, businesses and the economy. Whether it is investigating high profile mergers such as Tesco’s acquisition of Booker, taking enforcement action against drug firms accused of over-charging the NHS, investigating online ticket resale platforms over concerns they don’t give customers all the information they should or launching a major study into the care homes industry, what we do really matters and makes a difference to people’s lives.

Merger investigations are some of the most complex and challenging work that the CMA undertakes, demanding detailed analysis of businesses, sectors and industries. The role of Principal Case Officer is fundamental in ensuring that merger investigations are managed with clarity, robustness and rigour, in a way which secures the confidence and cooperation of a range of external stakeholders and interested third parties.

At the very centre of a high-performing multi-disciplinary professional team, you will be working with internal and external experts at the top of their game to develop theories of harm exploring how mergers may affect markets in the future, gather and test evidence to assess those theories and produce legally robust decisions setting out the CMA’s conclusions. As a result, you will gain exposure to market change within the wider economy, gain deep insight into complex companies and grow specialist expertise within this intricate, ever-changing area. The learning curve is unlike anything you might experience in a normal commercial practice. And with excellent senior support and specialist technical advice from senior colleagues, including the Office of the General Counsel (OGC), Senior Legal Directors and Legal Directors, this role is very definitely a career-enhancing opportunity.

We are keen to hear from qualified professionals including Lawyers, Accountants, Economists, Consultants and those with a business background. Experience of UK and/or EU competition law, ideally mergers, is a bonus but not essential.
