Assistant General Counsel

A market leading insurance business is looking to recruit an Assistant General Counsel into the team to join them on a permanent basis.

The role will report directly to the General Counsel and you will act as a trusted and senior legal advisor to the business, the board and the senior management team. You will work closely with all business units, including Underwriting, Claims, Business Development, IT/Operations, HR, Marketing and Finance to provide an efficient and strategic legal service to the business. You will play a key role in a small but busy and high performing team.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments, evaluate their impact on the business and communicate key implications to stakeholders alongside recommend action plans to implement into the business as required
  • Advise on regulatory and compliance issues
  • Review, draft and advise on a broad range of technical commercial contracts including - insurance policies, terms of business, service level agreements, delegated authority agreements and all commercial contracts with third parties
  • Deliver / facilitate legal and regulatory training for business units as required
  • Instruct external counsel on litigation matters where required - engage and manage relationships
  • Attend required Committee meetings
  • Other legal responsibilities as required

Experience & Skills:

  • Qualified Solicitor
  • Good knowledge of UK Insurance law, the UK Insurance market and regulatory landscape
  • High level of competence in drafting and negotiating wide ranging commercial contracts
  • In-House experience from the insurance sector or considerable experience dealing with insurance matters in private practice
  • Advanced knowledge of insurance and reinsurance and PRA / FCA regulations
  • A hands-on approach, a true-team player, personable and passionate about their work
