Assistant Solicitor – Human Rights Department Ref: AS/HR/EJ/MAR18

Leigh Day is urgently seeking an Assistant Solicitor to join its Human Rights team. This is an excellent opportunity to work with a team that specialises in human rights claims against public bodies, for example local authorities and hospitals, including civil compensation claims and public law challenges.

Key tasks and responsibilities;

The successful candidate will be working with a team that specialises in the protection of the rights of children, vulnerable adults and patients. It litigates legal aid claims for compensation and challenges decisions of public authorities as well as representing individuals without capacity in the Court of Protection. 

To be successful you must have;

  • 2-4 years relevant post qualification experience in Legal Aid and/or Human Rights in public and/or private law. However, practitioners with relevant litigation experience gained prior to qualification will also be considered.
  • A thorough understanding of Human Rights and Judicial Review. Knowledge of civil procedure and legal aid work is also essential.
  • Proven experience in conduct of cases from initial advice through to trial.
  • Demonstrable legal experience in the Court of Protection is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience of offering advice and managing difficult situations and conversations with vulnerable clients.

This is a 4 days per week role and is a 10 months fixed term contract based in London covering a period of maternity leave.
