The role of the Commercial and Corporate Legal Counsel is to provide legal advice, guidance and primary support to the Bank covering all of the customer segments and where priorities and resourcing require, other areas of the business / legal function within the UK.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing counsel and legal support in relation to all aspects of English banking and financial services law (including credit and lending) and material regulatory issues that have an impact on the business area (including regulated lending in the Business Banking customer segment).
  • Being considered a trusted legal adviser to the UK business by ensuring that commercially sensitive, pragmatic and practical legal support and advice is provided in a cost-effective and efficient manner to the relevant UK business area.
  • Providing support and guidance to the relevant UK business area with regard to legal issues and risks arising in jobholder's area of expertise.
  • Providing prompt, practical, commercial and sometimes complicated and / or specialised legal advice and support to the relevant UK business area.
  • Being proactive in the provision of legal support to and management of legal risks in the UK and related Functions.
  • Undertaking proactive stakeholder engagement and legal training to the UK Business.
  • Attending business and governance meetings where required.
  • Maintaining and developing positive and professional working relationships with all team members within the wider UK Legal Team, the UK Legal Team and relevant business stakeholders.
  • Participating effectively as part of the UK Legal Team.
  • Participating in the strategy for coordinating and promoting initiatives to share legal knowledge and best practices with legal colleagues.
  • Assisting in managing the approach to legal risk in the UK business area to ensure that the interests of the business are adequately protected.
  • Assisting the business to remain compliant with legal risk management requirements set out in the Group Standards Manual and Legal Functional Instruction Manual.
  • Working closely with Regulatory Compliance and Financial Crime Compliance teams to improve efficiency, collaborate and avoid duplication.


The ideal candidate for this role:

  • An English law qualified solicitor with at least 2 years PQE.
  • Experience of / exposure to banking transactional work.
  • Familiarity with the various vehicles through which business can be undertaken e. companies, incorporated partnerships, sole traders etc.
  • Familiarity with lending, security and priority arrangement documentation
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills with experience of adapting your style and approach to the audience and message to be delivered.
  • Ability to build effective networks across business areas, developing relationships based on mutual trust and encouraging others to do the same.
  • Ability to use business knowledge and understanding of client needs to successfully manage and grow client relationships.
