Contract: 2 year fixed term contract (with opportunity to go permanent)

Are you a qualified lawyer looking for a new challenge? Or returning to work after an extended career break? If so, then this role might be for you.

The CMA is responsible for promoting competition and consumer protection across the UK. Our aim is to make markets work well for consumers, businesses and the economy.

We are looking for qualified lawyers with no (or no recent) previous competition or consumer law experience to join our expanding team of advisory lawyers. If successful, you will take part in a two year structured training programme during which you will gain experience working on a mix of competition and consumer law matters. Depending on your prior knowledge and experience, you will also be expected to complete relevant qualifications in both competition and consumer law (for which funding will be provided by the CMA).

The types of work that you may be involved in during the two year programme include:

  • Competition law enforcement
  • Consumer law enforcement
  • Merger control
  • Market studies and investigations
  • Regulatory appeals

Subject to satisfactory performance, the expectation is that successful candidates will be kept on after the end of the two year period as a permanent member of the CMA’s legal team advising on competition and/or consumer law matters.

With markets changing fast, and the prospect of legal change related to the EU exit, this is an exciting time to join us. Our work is varied, complex and highly rewarding. As a lawyer in the CMA Legal Service, you will be encouraged to apply your legal skills across a number of our practice areas while also developing specialist expertise. You will work alongside like-minded professionals on cases which can directly benefit the lives of everyone in the UK.

Successful applicants will play a critical part in the delivery of high quality legal analysis from the outset of a project, shaping the legal framework, assessing evidence and ensuring that we produce legally robust decisions – as well as defending those decisions in court.
