WELLCOME - Associate Legal Counsel (Investments)

In House - Corporate / Investments Lawyer - 2+ pqe - London

Wellcome has a £23.2 billion investment portfolio (as at 30 September 2017) which funds the charitable work it does and is managed by Wellcome’s experienced Investments team. A rare opportunity has now arisen in the legal team supporting Wellcome’s investment activity, at Associate Legal Counsel level.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as internal adviser for the Investments team, to address commercial, strategic and legal issues including risk, governance and compliance;
  • Provide high quality, strategic and innovative legal support, adapting existing skills for use in new areas where needed;
  • Support commercial evaluation of transactions, review and negotiate legal documents and assist with project management;
  • Collaborate with internal teams including tax, finance, operations and risk;
  • Co-ordinate with external advisers including government and regulatory groups;
  • Work constructively and build trusted relationships within the Investments team and a close-knit Legal team; and
  • Be open to new challenges and willing to continuously develop, personally and professionally.

Requirements:

  • UK qualified solicitor;
  • At least 2 years corporate or investment management pqe including ideally some in-house experience;
  • Experience of drafting and negotiating agreements for a range of commercial and investment transactions;
  • Experience of structuring and negotiating joint venture and partnership agreements and/or ISDA documents and investment management agreements (IMAs) would be desirable;
  • Experience of applying legal expertise to a range of business and legal problems; and
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
