The Government Legal Department is the largest provider of legal services across government. From roads to rivers, and health to human rights, its work touches on most aspects of public life. We are looking to identify Deputy Directors (each jointly responsible for one of 7 legal teams in the Commercial Law Group) to be based in Leeds, Manchester or London.
The Commercial Law Group consists of approximately 120 lawyers mainly providing non-contentious commercial legal services to a range of Government Departments. This is an exciting time to be a commercial lawyer in Government and the Group is often involved in the delivery of the most important and complex of Government policies, projects and programmes. Of public and media interest the work requires interaction with Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and Chief Executives.
Skills & Attributes:
- Demonstrable ability to advise on complex commercial projects and contracts, gained from any type of transactional work, including corporate, finance (including PFI), procurement etc.
- The ability to pick up new areas of work quickly and to oversee the work of other lawyers in the team, ensuring quality, providing support and challenging as necessary.
- The communication and management skills to lead and motivate staff and to work collaboratively with peers at a time of growing work pressures – championing talent, building a strong culture of continuous learning and improving staff engagement.
- A Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive qualified in England and Wales, able to achieve instant credibility with Ministers and Commercial Directors.
- A commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
