We are currently recruiting for a part-time, Employment Solicitor to provide maternity cover for up to/around 12 months, who will be providing strategic and day-to-day support to the General Counsel. We are looking for someone to deliver an efficient, professional, and customer-focused service within Manchester Metropolitan University.

Typically, you will:

Provide specialist, technical legal advice to the Director of HR and the HR team both proactively and upon request regarding employment law matters. This will involve such activities as:

  • development of HR related policies;
  • disciplinary and grievance matters;
  • equality and diversity;
  • equal pay;
  • organisational restructures;
  • TUPE;
  • Data Protection and Freedom of Information matters;
  • advocacy in court/tribunal;
  • internal training in HR matters;
  • employee relations and Trade Union issues; and
  • employment tribunal
  • and such other areas of business that are regarded a priority.

The candidate will also liaise with the HR team to ensure a good working knowledge of their systems, priorities and legal requirements, in order to support them in identifying areas of risk and develop appropriate advice that supports their wider objectives.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a qualified Solicitor/Barrister, with evidence of keeping up to date with relevant developments in the law and ongoing professional development.
  • Be able to liaise credibly and articulately with other professionals and senior colleagues in relation to complex, sensitive, high risk and high value matters.
  • Cultivate relationships to communicate the importance of legal compliance and consideration and negotiate effectively, sometimes on sensitive issues, and can demonstrate this.
  • Be highly experienced in identifying potential legal risks (in the law context of Employment law) and developing appropriate advice to mitigate or remove those risks.
  • Have the experience of successful delivery of internal training and ability to make presentations to stakeholders.
