We have an opportunity for an advisory lawyer in a Central Government Department.

It is headed by the General Counsel and Solicitor, and includes approximately 150 lawyers who advise on legal issues arising from the policy and operational work and conduct the Department's litigation.

The legal work is high quality and covers a broad range of subjects. In addition to tax, the advice covers a range of general public law issues for the department, including human rights, administrative law, European law, freedom of information and sometimes commercial law.

There lawyers work in specialist teams handling specific areas of work. Each team tends to focus on either advisory work or litigation and the opportunities available in this trawl are for the former.

There is one position for a lawyer to carry out advisory work in relation to public international law in the cross-cutting team which advises on a range of public law, EU law and tax administration issues. It is part of the Business Tax Directorate in SOLS.

There work involves policy and legislation, including public international law. This specific role will cover a wide range of public international law matters, including advising on the content of Free Trade Agreements, but also includes issues such as the interpretation and implementation of international agreements, and matters relating to the World Trade Organisation Rules.

We are looking for an intellectually capable, highly motivated lawyer with powerful oral and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills. You will be working as part of a team of lawyers based in London.

You will need good legal professional skills, including the following essential requirements:
*reliable legal judgement and appreciation of legal risk
*sound analysis of issues, using secure legal research
*making evidence based decisions
*managing a quality service for clients

Legal professional or academic experience is required as follows:
