A unique General Counsel opportunity within the risk and compliance and internal commercial contracts team of a leading national law firm. Acting purely for the firm (no external client work or billing targets), applicants from in-house backgrounds or private practice will be considered. BCL Legal is excited to be working alongside this leading national firm in its recruitment of a General Counsel to oversee the firm's risk and compliance team as well as a Legal Counsel focusing on commercial contracts. The successful General Counsel should have a minimum of ten years' post qualification experience either from industry or private practice or ideally a mixture of both.
The role:
Working in partnership will all levels of the firm. The General Counsel will head up the firm's sizeable Risk & Compliance team as well as a Legal Counsel. The team is based in London and Birmingham and the role would form part of this team based in either London, or Birmingham with flexible working very much considered.
Responsibilities:
- Providing internal expertise to the firm on its statutory, regulatory and contractual obligations;
- Company Secretarial duties and all corporate governance to meet the firms regulatory requirements;
- Overseeing risk and compliance and ensuring that regulatory requirements are met as part of a proactive risk management strategy in conjunction with designated loss prevention and managing ethics specialists;
- Supporting the Managing Partners/Senior Partners and Board and counselling the Managing Partners and other senior management with respect to the legal implications of the firm's major decisions, strategies and transactions;
- Working closely with the Executive on delivering the strategic plans for the firm and achievement of strategic objectives and safeguarding the firm's interests;
- Serving as a key adviser to the Managing Partners on issues of firm governance, firm growth and special projects, practice management and knowledge management;
- First point of call for litigation matters and handling claims and complaints;
- Reviewing agreements between the firm, its partners or employees or any third party;
- Reviewing supplier contracts for the business support teams and improving process for, and procurement of, relevant third party services;
- Policy writing.
The successful General Counsel will have:
- Extensive experience on issues relating to legal and regulatory compliance including a working knowledge of the SRA code of conduct;
- Experience of other wide ranging risk issues including data protection, confidentiality, commercial contracts and cyber security;
- A commitment to fostering best practice and a thorough understanding of risk and compliance in a business/law firm.
The successful General Counsel will:
- Be a confident, approachable, hardworking and robust team player and leader who is comfortable handling a range of commercial queries and providing advice direct to the business;
- Be able to build trusted relationships with the key stakeholders within the business at all levels;
- Have excellent interpersonal, written communication and independent judgement, as you will be required to work closely with partners and senior management on matters which are sensitive and time critical;
- Have the ability to manage and motivate a team, setting clear objectives and providing guidance and support;
- Have drive and enthusiasm.
There is scope for flexibility within this role in terms of working patterns, remote working and part-time options.
