An inquisitive brokerage house is looking expand its legal team with the appointment of a Legal Counsel.  Joining 6 other lawyers and a trainee in the central London office, you will be given responsibility for a wide range of legal matters.  As such, this represents a rare opportunity for a lawyer with predominantly transactional experience to develop a broad generalist practice.

In the past year, the company has completed a couple of sizeable acquisitions, been involved in a major piece of High Court litigation and launched a new trading product, and the legal team has supported on all of these matters.  Whilst there are no large projects in the pipeline, this gives a flavour of the sheer breadth and variety of work that the legal team has been exposed to and will, in all likelihood, be exposed to in future.

Outside of major projects/transactions/litigation, the business-as-usual work comprises

  • drafting, reviewing and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts;
  • intellectual property;
  • regulatory compliance;
  • corporate advisory and company secretarial work; and
  • general ad hoc legal queries

The successful candidate will have 1-4 years' PQE* with training contract having been completed at a well-regarded city law firm.  Post-qualification experience is likely to have been gained in a transactional practice area (eg banking & finance, corporate, commercial) with exposure to financial services clients.  Prior in-house experience, whilst viewed favourably, is not essential.

The team have all had high-calibre training at well-regarded law firms, and all elected to join the company in order to diversify their experience and work in what is highly commercial environment.  The culture of the team is open, collaborative and supportive, so identifying a candidate who will complement this is extremely important.

*Reference to PQE is a guideline only and does not preclude applications from candidates with more or less experience.
