The University of the Arts London (UAL) is looking for a Legal Counsel to join their in-house team for an Employment law focused role. Offered on a full-time, permanent basis, this In-House Counsel is to be based with UAL’s central legal services team at Central St Martins College in Kings Cross, London.

The Legal Counsel will be joining a growing team that provides a full range of legal services and advice across the university as well as its group companies on a wide range of commercial matters.

Responsibilities of your new role

You will be taking on a newly created Legal Counsel role, predominately assist the Human Resources department with Employment law issues while also supporting the Legal Services team with a range of issues, such as the business demands. Reporting to the General Counsel, your key duties as Legal Counsel will include:

  • Advising on a wide range of employment law matters both contentious and non-contentious
  • Drafting, advising on and negotiating, as required, a variety of agreements, including contracts of employment, settlement agreements and general commercial agreements
  • Undertaking complex and routine legal cases involving employment matters
  • Reviewing and advising Human Resources on process and policies
  • The creation of precedents and establishing know how to empower colleagues in Human Resources
  • The monitoring of changes in employment law as they affect the university and implementing changes as required
  • Engaging with colleagues, stakeholders and external legal advisors
  • Guiding and training of junior legal team members on employment law matters
  • Managing financial matters associated with the role
  • Acting in such a way as is reasonably necessary to fulfil the duties and responsibilities of a senior member of the University

Candidate requirements

UAL is looking for a talented Legal Counsel who demonstrates:

  • 4+ years of PQE gained either in-house or in private practice
  • Substantial employment law expertise with a mix of both contentious and non-contentious work in addition to broad commercial experience
  • Excellent drafting skills, an eye for detail, great communication skills and a keen understanding of the law
  • A collaborative approach and a can-do attitude combined with an agile response to matters
